The $2 trillion federal stimulus bill (CARES Act), passed on March 27, created a number of new temporary relief programs available from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). In addition to small businesses, independent contractors (self-employed) and nonprofits are eligible for some of the programs. This is a change from previously offered opportunities through the SBA. Also, some loans will be converted to grants, if certain conditions are met. The intention is to support small businesses and their employees, while so many businesses are shuttered.
